Four Pictures of Love

The Play

Evelyn and Daniel are having an extramarital affair.
But everything is turned upside down when they decide to confess their relationship to their spouses.

Two cleverly intersecting love stories attempt to answer the question:
Can betrayal in love be forgiven? What constitutes true love? Is it the one that accepts polygamy –as the ultimate stage of accepting the other– or the one that punishes it? Resting on his distinctive elliptical structure and language, Lukas Bärfuss seeks a modern love ethic that could restore the original meaning of love.

Lukas Bärfuss

Lukas Bärfuss was born in 1971 in Thun, Switzerland and lives in Zürich.
Up to 1997, he practiced various professions:
tobacco farmer, truck driver, bookstore clerk, etc.
He is one of the most promising German-speaking playwrights of his generation.

He has written the following works:
‘Alice’s Trip to Switzerland’ (Alices Reise in die Schweiz, 2005), ‘Henry IV. According to Shakespeare’ (2004), ‘The Sexual Neuroses of our Parents’ (Die sexuellen Neurosen unserer Eltern, 2003), ‘Four Pictures of Love’ (Vier Bilder der Liebe, 2002), ‘Othello’ (2001), ‘Meienberg’s Death’ (Meienbergs Tod, 2001), ‘Medea, 214 Picture Descriptions’ (2000), ‘Four Women’ (Vier Frauen, 2000), ‘74 Seconds’ (74 Sekunden, 2000), ‘17:17’ (Siebzehn Uhr Siebzehn, 2000), ‘Sophocles’ Oedipus’ (Sophokles’ Ödipus, 1998), and others.
Besides theatrical plays, Bärfuss also writes short stories and novels.
He has received numerous awards for both his theatrical and literary work.

In spite of Bärfuss’s elliptical writing style, his characters are designed with clarity, constantly flirting with realism – just like his work as a whole.
Spectators can even associate a theatrical hero with a real, familiar individual.
At the same time, however, this peculiar truth has universal features:
without abolishing their individuality, the persons of the play represent specific human types and serve as archetypes.
The straightforwardness and directness of Bärfuss’s theatrical writing are constantly grafted onto his sharp humour.
Humour erupts even in extremely emotionally charged moments, reminding us that, just like in real life, laughter and tears can closely accompany us.
